Basic infos about EDX and Microanalysis (EPMA)

In the energy region of the primary electrons from 5 to 50 keV the following interaction processes between electrons and target (specimen) are important, from the view of Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA):

- elastic interaction effects of the electrons
- stopping radiation of charged particles in the electrical Coloumb field of nucleous - ionization by pulling out electrons from the internal levels of the electron shell of atoms

The three interaciton effect processes lead to the model of the "ionization pear" in the EPMA:

Basic infos about Micro-XRF

Modern devices with capillary optics can focus the X-ray beam to a small spot (less than 100 microns). This new Micro-XRF technology is able to perform microanalysis with higher detection limits than EPMA, because there is no Bremsstrahlung background due to charged particles (no electron excitation)

Line energies and spectra simulation

The MA-Table software:

     * energetic position of lines (line energies)
     * relative height relations in a line series
     * critical excitation energies
     * line overlaps etc.

... X-ray line positions and heights can be indicated or be simulated as line marks and also as calculated peak series in a spectrum window. Dependent from the excitation conditions, the spectral distribution of the Bremssrahlung is computed. Finally a complete simulation (theoretical computation) of the measured spectrum including pulse statistics and artefacts (e.g. Escape-effect) is possible in dependence of excitation conditions and detector parameters...
